Mind Over Matters

Things that happened this weekend that mattered:

  • A friend's dog died.

  • People in Japan struggled to rebuild their nation.

  • We hosted a fantastic day of competition, camaraderie, and community in an old mill building in a cold northern state.

  • I was not as kind as I could have been.

Things that happened this weekend that didn't matter:

  • A judge in the heat of the moment misjudged a few reps on a movement.

  • A known cheater at another affiliate posted a high score for Open Workout #2.

  • My expectations were not always met by the people in my life.

Maybe it's time for perspective.

We all get caught up in the heat of the moment.

And see, passion is a great thing -- a wonderful thing -- a heady, fantastic "I love this stuff!" ride that swells your heart and helps you to do things that you thought never possible.

But maybe passion needs that old companion of perspective. They kind of balance each other out.

And I, for one, have been caught up in the romance of CrossFit and life lately, and have not been paying attention to reality.

So I need to settle things out.

I'm tossing both passion and perspective in my truck -- and I'm pouring myself a big cup of Whatthef***doesitmatter, and continuing with this ride.

The bumps and the potholes will always be there, but I don't have to let them jar me so much. I'm the one behind the wheel and I get to pick where I'm going . . .
