"I'm Not Criticizing, But ..."

Lately, I notice more of a trend where people say in person or write online, "I'm not criticizing but ..."

Well, yes you are. You're criticizing.

Saying that you're not criticizing before you reveal your beefs doesn't negate that your beefs are beefs.

But you know what? It doesn't matter.

If you need to voice a complaint, voice it. Say what you have to say.

Why do we spend so much of this life choking back the words in our own throats?

If it's to be kind, I get that, and I applaud your efforts. If it's because there is no value in getting embroiled in a mess, I understand your reluctance.

But if it's because you're scared, I hope you find more courage to say what you really feel.

Because the graveyards echo with whispers of words left unsaid.

No one leaves this world having expressed everything inside them, but some folks get closer than others.

We spend so much time covering up our true feelings. Why? Say what you need to say. Say the words with kindness, if you can.

  • Whisper them if you want.

  • Yell them if you must.

  • Write them if that's your thing.

But remember this: There is no honor in the unlived life, nor is there valor in the words that you were too scared to speak.

And this: If you do not make waves, the water never changes.
