It's Okay to Take Care of Yourself

"It is our humility, our desire to be of service, that makes us stars. Not our arrogance." – Marianne Williamson

Serving is difficult in practice and mentality.

Not because doing for others is difficult, rather because striking the proper balance of doing for others and doing for ourselves can be very tricky.

We see often in life these ends of the seesaw:

  • People who mostly serve others and not themselves. We can often recognize these people by their dialogue of sacrifice and their exhaustion.

  • People who mostly serve themselves and not others. We can spot their words and arrogance from afar.

Those are the ends of the seesaw, and we all know that ends of the seesaw are easy. That's why people camp out on the ends.

Balancing in the middle of the seesaw – and rebalancing constantly – is hard. It requires you to serve others, while remembering to serve yourself, too.

It forces you to realize, again and again, that there is nothing wrong with attending to your own needs. It requires you to resist the thinking that tells you that you don't matter, that everyone else is more important.

You do matter, and it's okay to take care of yourself.

Life is a constant adjustment of what matters most, but that's okay. Keep trying to find the sweet spots of life, where you help others and feed your soul without burning out.

Because you are worth it.
