The Glorious Unevenness of It All

In the words of my friend Ray, "People suck."And that's the glory of it all.See, people do suck. They complain and lie and stab you in the back and cut you off at the knees, and you can add another piece of violent imagery here too. Whatever you imagine they can do to be sucky, they've done it ... and more. It happens. But just because people suck does not mean that they're not wonderful too. People are wonderful. Sometimes their ratios are off and they're more sucky than wonderful. But that happens to all of us. Somewhere right now, someone is probably thinking you're more sucky than wonderful. Does that really bother you? It shouldn't. You probably are more sucky than wonderful sometimes. We all are. Don't kid yourself that you're any different. You are just like fitness Full of so many different skills and movements that you can't be great at all of them all of the time.

  • Your squat might be beautiful but you don't have an L-sit.
  • You might have a muscle-up but not a good snatch.
  • You might have awesome technical coaching skills but you're a bit lacking in empathy.
  • You might be a great people person but have a hard time holding to standards.

Nobody has a fantastic everything all the time. The only thing different about you is that you probably want to be better. You're reading a fitness and mindset blog. That tells me you want to be better. And not everyone wants to be better, or is willing to do the work to get better. So pick something you're not good at today and work on it.Because working on your weaknesses will teach you far more than working on your strengths ever could. There's only one way to improve your sucky/wonderful ratio – and that's to work on the suck.So go suck. Get at it. Get better.
