The Person Who Will Free You

The person who will free you is you.

Stop thinking it's someone else, or that it could be anyone else.

We get this not-so-hot idea in life from somewhere (Our family? Our friends? Our culture?) that we are not the hero. That we should wait for the hero.

Guess what?

You are the flippin' hero in your life.

You. Not someone else.

You.

We also get this idea that God or the universe will save us, that some divine event or series of events will put us on the right path and lead us to the Promised Land.

And maybe that's not exactly it either.

Maybe "the secret" looks a bit more like hard work, laughter, love, kindness, and cold beer on the front porch afterward.

Maybe to get to the Promised Land, you have to throw yourself on the line like Bruce Springsteen sang about: "There's a dark cloud rising from the desert floor. Packed my bags and I'm heading straight into the storm. Gonna be a twister to blow everything down that ain't got the faith to stand its ground."

Head straight into the storm.

Or, start your own storm, and call down the thunder too – the thunder from within yourself.

Because the person who will free you ... is you.
